As stated it is a Bike Friday Sat-R Day, a much sturdier and better bike than a Dahon. There are a few posting on the bike in this blog with better pictures, just use the search at top of page.

On the Sat-R-Day it is done a little differently. The chain ring equivalent is in the rear hub. I have XTR cogs and a low range triple internal hub.

It is not quite as good as the standard set up but pretty good.

Hi Roland, how did you put a 3-ring chainwheel on your early-model SatRday? I could only put on a single ring as there's no place for a derailleur.

David, I haven't seen a new Sat-R day so I can't comment on it.

Panniers versus trailer is an on going debate. I can't say I have consistent answers.

My logic goes like this. A trailer adds about 15 pounds to your load and on flat roads that is hardly noticeable. Plus the trailer is much easier to load and unload. So when I tour locally with Jeanne, I take the trailer.

If I expect lots of mountains then I usually use panniers.

The exception is the Sat-R day. The rear rack doesn't pack in the case so if you are traveling with the bike packed, the only answer that makes sense is to use the case as a trailer.

What is the general consensus about the Sat-R-day compared to other recumbents. Is the new 20 inch wheeled version an improvement? I understand it is a less upright riding position and some people complain of having to uncomfortably crane their necks forward.

Do Sat-R-day riders favor panniers over the Bike Friday trailer? I never liked trailing the suitcase on my Bike Friday pocket Llama and use panniers instead.
