I have been very put off by the internecine battle that is destroying Bicycle Racing in Europe. That battle even more than the doping controversy has been very ugly. But watching the Tour of California last month, I was drawn back by the beauty of the sport. The 2008 Tour of California was one of the most exciting bicycle races I have ever watched and I have watched almost every televised Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a Espana since Greg Lemond won the TDF. It was amazingly beautiful and powerful. Team Astana was clearly the most powerful team but my heart was with George Hincapie and Tyler Hamilton(who was not allowed to ride).
The riders more than anyone else are the people being hurt by this ugly war in Bicycle Racing. I want to see Levi Leipheimer, the USA’s Top Racer, and Alberto Contador, last year’s TDF Winner, race in the 2008 Tour de France but them have been banned from the race because of ???. Here is what the head of the UCI (cycling international governing body) had to say:
“Why should Astana be singled out? It is completely unjust. It is a collective punishment on riders who have absolutely no involvement in the Astana team of 2006 and the problems of 2006 and 2007. These riders are new to the team, there is a new management, and they have done everything in their power to put the right systems in place to ensure that the team is 100% correct.”
