2006 Montreal Bike Festival

I am making plans now to be in Montreal June 1 for the 2008 Bicycle Festival. I missed last year’s ride but was there in 2006, this is an amazing event. My wife loves the feeling of festival. This event draws all kinds of riders and lots of them over 35,000 most years. But despite the amazing number of riders it is a low stress and easy to attend event. The organizers do an amazing job. They close the streets to cars and open the parks up as rest stops for this ride that circles the City.

You can travel with your bike to the event on the subway if you aren’t staying downtown but the ferries won’t be running early enough to get you there for the start. There is also a lot of parking near the start if you are coming in by car.

There are two main events:

1. The Friday Night Ride – May 30 – Un Tour la Nuit This is traditionally very crazy with many riders dressed in costumes

2. The Sunday Morning Ride – June 1 – Tour de l’Île de Montréal – This is the amazing mass ride along the car free streets of Montreal

The route hasn’t been announced yet for this year but it is always a fun ride. Typically about 30 easy miles but you can’t easily lengthen or shorten the ride.

You will need to register for the ride and the registration fee is reduced if you register before the ride at Velo Quebec.

Hope to see lots of Recumbent Riders there again this year.

  1. Great event in Montréal; FYI Berlin has the largest mass ride in the world. Approximately 250,000 participated in 2007. This video was shot by someone riding part of the route I covered: I hoped I would be in the video, but I did take some pictures and came home with one of those snazzy orange Security shirts!

  2. Michael – Thanks for the information. I got that information from the Montreal Bike Festival web site.

Are you referring to “Sternfahrt” (Star Ride). I think the folks in Montreal may be making a pretty fine point, I’ll have to check their wording more closely. They may be calling “Sternfahrt” (Star Ride) in 2004 a demonstration or rally not a group ride because it didn’t start at one point and has multiple routes. Also, the press calls it a Bike Rally. But thanks for bringing it up – sounds like a group ride to me. Must have been amazing to be there.

I’d love to see some pictures of the ride if you have some. The 250,000 number is mind blowing.
